We’ve all heard about North Korea, it’s crazy leader and the terrible conditions, but let’s listen to what people who escaped have to say.
In an interview with title “What North Korean Defectors Think Of North Korea” the reporter asked North Korean Defectors to “paint” a more accurate picture about the secretive country.
“I left North Korea in 2001, spent 3 years in China and 10 years in South Korea” one defector said, then, the interviewer asked him about the reason he decided to escape.
“The biggest reason was… I didn’t know when I was going to die of starvation. Since Jim Jong-il came into power, North Korea experienced a major famine that claimed as many as 3 million lives.”,
“I experienced it all first hand”
“You actually witnessed someone die?”, in some point the interviewer asked:
“I saw a 2 year old girl die right in front of me. You see, when a person dies, flies are the first to know.”, the defector answered,
“Even though she was still breathing, they must’ve known she was going to die like how rats or other animals run away before earthquakes.”
“Before we went to China, we thought it was the greatest country on Earth.”
In some point, the reporter asked about their escape and how they made it out:
“You have to cross either the Tumen River or the Amnok River to go to China.”, she also mentioned, “It’s so cold in February that rivers would totally freeze.”
“Someone is watching to shoot you while you cross”,
“That’s right, North Korean soldiers would be underground pointing guns through holes.”, she said.
North Korean solders are there to shoot anyone who tries to escape. There is no communication with the outside world.
“If we get caught calling South Korea the entire family will die.”
